Realistic work will always be an ongoing part of my practice. It is what originally inspired me to become an artist. For many years I focused exclusively on still life studies and practiced the traditional techniques that were developed in Europe during the Renaissance. The objects I depict were chosen because they looked like they would be interesting to render in paint, or I thought they presented a challenge that I wanted to put myself up against. There is no special symbolism or meaning beyond that. I try to arrange compositions that could be anytime in the 20th or 21st century, not a particular decade.

I always work from direct observation of the items arranged in studio; no photos, camera-obscura, or other shenanigans. Just the hand, the eye, and cyan, magenta, yellow, and white.
