I did these drawings of produce items in a three-month span a couple of winters ago. During this process I would spend a long time at the grocery store looking for the perfect specimen.

People must have thought I was hopelessly OCD--picking up an onion, looking at it very closely all over, muttering to myself, putting it back down, picking up another onion, and another, and another. After maybe half an hour in the place, I would walk out with three tomatoes or a pepper. I never got my actual groceries there because it was Whole Foods and way out of the price range of

a starving bohemian artist. But they certainly had some fine looking produce.  This was a business expense, you see. I could write off a six-dollar apple. No doubt dropped me at least one tax bracket.

The staff probably had nicknames they mocked me with. Eventually feeling sorry for me, they likely discussed taking up a collection for my inevitable crushing psychiatric bills. Those silly kids. I was already in therapy; you should have seen me before! Little did they know that I was going to take this food home and stare at it for six hours and eventually start a website to immortalize it to the world.
